Every empty kilometre is waste — fuel, income, and emissions

A large share of trucks in Kenya drive home empty after making a delivery. That's not a footnote — it's one of the biggest inefficiencies in Kenyan freight, and it's the problem PickApp's backhaul matching is built to solve.

The problem

70% of Kenyan trucks return empty

A truck that delivers cargo from Industrial Area to Karen and then drives back empty has burned fuel, taken up road space, and earned its driver nothing for that return leg — all because there was no way to find a return load in time. Multiply that across thousands of trips a day, and empty return running becomes one of the largest sources of avoidable cost and emissions in the country's freight sector.

What we're building

Backhaul matching, built into every trip

As PickApp onboards drivers on a corridor, our platform is designed to surface return-load opportunities the moment a delivery is confirmed — so a truck heading back from Karen to Industrial Area can pick up a paying load instead of driving back empty. This is a core part of how the platform is built, not an add-on feature, because it's the single biggest lever for making Kenyan freight more efficient.

Better earnings per truck
A driver who fills the return leg earns on both directions of a trip instead of one — the same truck, the same fuel, more income.
Fewer trucks needed per tonne
When trucks carry cargo in both directions instead of one, moving the same volume of goods needs fewer total trips.
Lower emissions per delivery
Fewer empty kilometres driven means less fuel burned to move the same amount of cargo across Nairobi and beyond.
An honest note on where we are: these are the outcomes PickApp's backhaul matching is designed to deliver as we onboard more drivers on each corridor — not independently audited results. We'll share real numbers as our driver network and trip volume grow.
